Atheists are learning from our gay friends that in order to change people’s perception, we have to be visible. Just as the gay community has made huge progress in public opinion with various coming out campaigns, a new movement has formed to help get atheists out of the closet… or in this case the pews.
“We Are Atheism” is a relatively new campaign started by Amanda Brown and Adam Brown. They are asking atheists to make YouTube videos and write essays talking about how we came out of the pew and to give encouragement to others to also come out:
“This is your chance to finally be heard. This is our chance to stand up, speak out, and be counted. We want to provide a platform for atheists around the globe to see that they are not alone. Atheists come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and backgrounds. The only thing that we all have in common is that we don’t see any credible evidence to believe in a god. It’s ok to be an atheist, and we want the world to know.”
Well known atheist bloggers, Greta Christina, Hemant Mehta, Jen McCreight, Jacob Kramer, myself and many other atheists have already posted videos and testimonials. Dave Silverman, President of American Atheists also posted a video. Join the movement. Check out all the videos and essays at WeAreAtheism.com.
