Join the coupon craze: Where to find coupons

Using coupons is more popular than ever, especially with the new Extreme Couponing Show on TLC making headlines. However, you don't have to be an extreme couponer to save money, just a smart shopper. The Sunday paper used to be the only source for coupons but there are plenty of online resources such as RedPlum, Coupons.com and SmartSource.com

Remember to only use coupons for items that you actually use. Saving money on a product that will just sit on your shelf at home is not a bargain.

Where to find coupons:

Grocery Stores: Most major grocery stores have coupon machines on various aisle throughout the store. They are typically attached to the shelves near products that are frequently purchased. You simply pull a coupon out of the machine for the products you buy. Keep in mind that most of these coupons do not allow doubling, so make sure they are worth using.

Mail: Your mailbox is now a great source for coupons. There are several publications like Red Plum that send out coupons weekly by mail. If you don't already get them in the mail, you can sign up to get on the mailing list by signing up on-line at Redplum.com.

Internet: The Internet is a haven for finding coupons. There are many sites to choose from and all you need is a computer and a printer. If you do not have one, your local library has computers you can use with your library card.  Do not sign up for any sites that require you to pay a fee to get coupons.

Great sites to try are Coupons.comsmartsource.com, redplum.com, and coolsavings.com.

Coupon Clipping Services: These companies charge a nominal fee to clip coupons for you, but if you have an item that you want to stock up on, it’s a lot cheaper than buying 20 Sunday newspapers! Try Coupons by Dede (whole inserts and coupons) Coupon Clippers or  Coupon Carryout for quick service.

Company Websites:  If you use particular products frequently, locate the Internet site for that product. You can usually enter your email address on their site and get coupon offer by email or find them right on the site. Kellogg’s is one site that consistently has great coupons.

Mobile Apps: Check your smartphone for great deals. There are many iPhone and Android mobile apps that lead you right to retailers that offer coupons/ deals that are sent to you by text. Try the Target smartphone app for scannable coupons that are sent via text.

Magazines: Most popular magazines have coupons in them for common household products and grocery items. Women's magazines like All You (available at Walmart) and home magazines are likely to have the most coupons in the advertisements. Check through your magazines before you throw them out for valuable savings.

Product Packaging: Inside the packaging of a great variety of products there are usually coupons good for your next purchase. Check carefully inside boxes and on wrappers for extra savings. You can also find coupons inside the product itself, such as cereal or dog food. In addition, some manufacturers will put removable coupons on the outside of a package that you must use at the time of purchase.

Sunday Paper: Most cities across the country have a major, local paper with a Sunday edition. Although there are so many other resources, don't overlook the paper for coupons to not only grocery stores but products such as discount oil changes, restaurants and hair salons. The Providence Journal here in Rhode Island is usually packed with several coupon flyers each Sunday.

Coupon use is more popular than ever in this economy. Take advantage of the savings by using coupons.

Local Tip: Stop & Shop and Shaw's stores in Rhode Island have both in-house coupon machines as well as coupons on their websites. SIgn up with your store savings card on line for more money saving coupons that you can print out at home. See website list below. If you don't have a grocery store card, such as Stop & Shop or Shaws here in RI, make sure you get one. You'll get on the mailing list and the weekly flyers often come with extra coupons.
