Sonny Bryan’s Smokehouse is a barbecue joint that has a rich Dallas history. In 1910 Elias Bryan moved his family to Dallas from Cincinnati and opened the first Bryan’s Barbecue. Twenty five years later in 1935, Elias son William (known as ‘Red’ for his hair) opened his own barbecue joint in Oak Cliff. Working along side Red was his son, William Jr. (known as ‘Sonny’). Then in 1958, Sonny parted ways with Red and opened up his own barbecue place. It’s safe to say that the Bryan family is qualified in the barbecue arena. Currently Sonny Bryan’s has nine different restaurants across the DFW area, however the original location still stands on Inwood and Harry Hines.
Aside from being featured in numerous books, magazines, and television shows, Sonny Bryan’s has amassed a large contingent of faithful barbecue fans. A stop at the original location is a definite item that should be on the bucket list of any person who claims to be a fan of the ’cue. Like most good barbecue places, the exterior of the building resembles that of a wood shed rather than a restaurant. However, as you should know, this typically is the sign of a barbecue place that knows what they’re doing.
