Join San Jose Councilmembers Pete Constant and Pierluigi Oliverio on Friday, April 15, 2011 at the 6th Annual West Valley Senior Walk at Valley Fair Mall. This City of San Jose District 1 event, in partnership with District 6 and Westfield Valley Fair Mall is free, and more than just a walk through the mall.
In addition to meeting and chatting with the two councilmembers, attendees can enjoy a free breakfast (provided by Westfield Valley Fair), try mall walking with a friendly crowd, and talk to representatives of 80 local businesses and non-profit groups that serve Silicon Valley seniors.
Free event meets needs of seniors and community
“We all know that health and welfare is an important issue as our aging population grows," District 1 Councilmember Pete Constant told San Jose Fitness.
According to the US Census Bureau, 11% of Santa Clara County residents are age 65 and over, making events like this a wider community issue. And with the rising costs of health care, events that can provide people with the tools for preventatve fitness are becoming increasingly important.
Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio (District 6) spoke directly to the fitness needs of seniors. "It is important that people walk for fitness at all stages of life. Indoor shopping malls provide seniors a climate controlled environment and open early to let walkers enjoy walking on flat surfaces."
Annual event is a great resource
Constant said he believes that this event is, "a perfect opportunity to introduce seniors to the benefits of mall walking while providing them all the resources they need in one place."
Originated by previous Councilmember Linda LeZotte, the Senior Walk is an opportunity for seniors to meet other people and learn about the businesses and services available. Following is a sampling of the 80 businesses and non-profits that will be there:
Active Over 50, All About Seniors, Almaden Valley Athletic Club, Breathe California,
Silicon Valley Village Project, Smiles for Seniors, Urbane Concierge
