Nearly 100 people including this Examiner met Mayor Karl Dean's Walk 100 Miles Challenge in 2012. The combined total miles for all the walking participants was over 18,400 miles.
I was able to surpass my own 100 mile goal by walking my dogs at various Nashville parks and in my neighborhood, by participating in the Nashville Hiking MeetUp hikes, and by wearing a pedometer to my retail job over the holidays which indicated I walked over 1 mile for every hour I worked. The challenge allows tracking for jobs where people walk a lot.
By the end of the three-month tracking period, I had logged 164.8 miles. In the process, I lost some weight, toned up, dropped a size, and won a t-shirt!
Now Mayor Karl Dean is inviting Nashville to walk with him again at the Walk 100 Miles finale on Saturday morning January 26 at 10 a.m at Centennial Park. The walk starts at the event shelter off Park Plaza at the north end of the park. The event will include a t-shirt giveaway for the 100 people who met the challenge and special recognition of 33 people who met the challenge in both 2011 and 2012 – for a total of 200 miles.
