The ski resorts are beginning to open for the season. The last couple of weekends have brought skiing and snowboarding, but the resorts have closed back down for the week. Now with some great temperatures for snow making and the return of snow showers, many are ready to open for the season. Today marks the beginning of normal operating hours at Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, Blue Knob, Wisp and Whitetail Resorts. Mystic Mountain at Nemacolin Woodlands is expected to open Christmas week. And it couldn’t come at a better time with snow in the forecast for the weekend across the area.

The weather should provide some great snow sports conditions for the weekend, even if it may make getting there a little more difficult. The Johnstown area and the Laurel Highlands, along with all of central Pennsylvania, are under a winter storm warning from 5:00 a.m. on Saturday morning through 4:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The forecast is for snow, heavy at times for much of the area Saturday and Saturday night. Some of the locations in the southern portion of the state, including the Johnstown area could see a mixture of sleet and freezing rain late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Scattered snow showers could return to some areas on Sunday but should diminish throughout the day. Temperatures are expected to be around freezing on Saturday and in the upper twenties on Sunday. Overnight lows should be in the mid-twenties on Saturday night and in the mid-teens Sunday night. Wind chills during the day could be in the low twenties.
