Earlier this week, we were facing some bitterly cold weather. Even the hardiest of outdoors enthusiasts were tempted to stay in and hibernate. The weekend is here and the temperatures have warmed up. So take the chance to get out and enjoy the weekend. One way is to take in some skiing, boarding or even tubing at one of our local resorts. Several resorts have special events going on this weekend.

Hidden Valley is wrapping up one of their big events on Saturday, January 11, 2014. The KDKA-TV Family Snow Blast has been going on since Thursday and will wrap up on Saturday with a couple of events. You can join news anchor Jennifer Antkowiak for a tubing party from noon until 1:00 p.m. For skiers, you can join the CW Green Team on the slopes from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Lift tickets are required for skiing and tubing tickets are required for the tubing party.

Over the mountain, Seven Springs will be taken over on Saturday afternoon by the 96.1 KISS Freak Show. The Freak Show Take Over at Seven Springs begins at 4:00 p.m. with a party at the Foggy Goggle hosted by Mikey and Big Bob. At 6:00 p.m. the party moves to the tubing park for a tubing party until 8:00 p.m. when the party moves back to the Foggy Goggle. Tubing park tickets are required for the tubing party.

Down the road in Maryland, Wisp Resort is hosting its first of three Subaru Winterfest weekends on Saturday, January 11 and Sunday January 12. During the free event, you can stop by the Subaru Igloo for some music, cookies, hot chocolate or coffee, and free giveaways. There will also be some free activities for you at the igloo and you can find out what is new at Subaru.

Whitetail Ski Area is hosting its first Rockstar Rail Jam of the year. The event starts at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 12, 2014. Participants can register at the ski area between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. for $10. You will need to have a current lift ticket for the day and all participants are required to wear a helmet.

One other event going on this weekend is Winter Trails Day. Winter Trails Day occurs on the second Saturday of January each year. This year marks the event’s nineteenth year. The event was developed to encourage people to try out cross country skiing and snowshoeing as a way to hit the trails in the winter. Several area state parks had scheduled events for Saturday, but were forced to cancel the events because of the lack of snow. However, you can always try on your own. While most of the resorts do not have their Nordic ski centers open this weekend, there are a couple of options. Nemacolin Woodlands’ Nordic ski center should be open this weekend for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. However, they suggest making reservations in advance. In addition, Seven Springs does offer Snow Shoe tours by reservation. Please contact the individual resorts to check on the availability of the activities and make reservations.

So check out the snow report and get out there this weekend Johnstown and enjoy a little bit of a warm up.
