This week has been a study in winter weather throughout the Johnstown Area. We have had snow, an ice storm and frigid temperatures. The family may be suffering from some cabin fever and ready to get out and have some fun. With temperatures forecast to be in the mid-twenties on Saturday, this is a great weekend to get out and have some fun outdoors.
One thing to try for the family is Mountain Pie Madness at Canoe Creek State Park on Saturday, February 8, 2014. The program begins at 1:00 p.m. at the Wentz Education Center. The program is free and does not require registration but donations would be appreciated. This program is a joint effort with the park and the Friends of Canoe Creek.
The main feature of the program will be making mountain pies around the campfire. Pie irons and pie fixings will be provided. There will also be a short hike to start the program. The program should offer a tasty way to enjoy the outdoors even in winter.
However, don’t just come out for the program, make a day of it. There are also areas in the park for sledding. Bring the family out for some fun in the snow. The park also offers cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and ice skating. According to this morning’s winter report the park has 5 inches of snow on the ground and the ice thickness was about 8 inches. The availability of winter activities are dependent on the snow and ice conditions which could change from day to day.
Canoe Creek State Park is located just east of Hollidaysburg off of US 22 about an hour and twenty minutes from Johnstown. From Johnstown take 219 north to Ebensburg and then follow 22 east through Hollidaysburg. Look for the signs directing you to the main park office.
So get out and have some family fun this weekend Johnstown.
