Johnstown outdoor family fun: 2014 Pennsylvania Adventure RV Expo

As March approaches, I am starting to see the signs in the store of an approaching spring. Lawn and garden equipment have replaced holiday decorations at the local stores. In addition, the other things that I have noticed are the St. Patrick’s Day Decorations. This time of year always reminds me of my father as he passed away on St. Patrick’s Day. But I also reflect on the things that he taught me like the love of the outdoors. And one of those memories in particular is on my mind this year.

As a little boy growing up two of my favorite times of year were when the local mall (not in the Johnstown area) would put on their annual boat show and camper show. It was a chance to go look at and dream about all of these wonderful toys with my father. I am looking forward to building memories like these with my son this year.

The 2014 Pennsylvania Adventure RV Expo rolls into Altoona beginning on Thursday, February 27, 2014. The expo lasts through Sunday, March 2, 2014 and has a new look for this year thanks to DiANDREA PROMOS. The Expo is returning to Altoona for the 13th year and will be held at the Blair County Convention Center. This year the expo is being sponsored by WTAJ-TV.

Come out for a chance to explore the latest in RV’s from several local dealers. This year’s dealers at the event will be:

In addition, there will be a Trailer Talk Series throughout the show. During the talks, you will learn tips, ideas and updates to operate, maintain and cherish your camper from experts on the subject. One other group RV group that will be present is Glendale Camper Rentals of Fallentimber. There

There will be exhibits from several campgrounds in central Pennsylvania. It is an excellent way to discover some of the hidden places to camp. Here are the campgrounds that will have displays at the expo:

This year they have added more activities for the entire family. The kids can take advantage of Fish Printing with Jody Wallace on Sunday. The entire family can enjoy master balloon artist and magician Dennie Huber on both Friday and Saturday. Stop and enjoy some campfire stories with Jan Kinney. On Saturday, Chief Richard Books and Sargent Leo Bergthe of the Allegheny Township Police will have their Child ID and Fingerprinting table set up.

You can also check out the speaker series for this year. You can learn about Kayaking in Central PA with WTAJ Meteorologist, Joe Murgo on Friday and Saturday. Also on Saturday, you can come learn about the Resurgence of the Bald Eagle in PA from PA Conservation Officer, Bill Brehun or Learn about Orienteering from Jim Wolfe. On Saturday evening meet the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Hunters. On Sunday, you can learn some Wilderness Survival tips from Susi Jolly from the Bedford County Wilderness Search and Rescue unit. I have also been asked to present several talks about camping including Family Camping Saturday morning and Backpacking Saturday afternoon then Environmentally Friendly Camping and Camping for People with Physical Challenges on Sunday afternoon. For a full listing of scheduled presentations, check out schedule on the PA Adventure RV Expo website.

Last but not least, what would a family event be without food? Blair County Convention Center Chef Tom will have a canteen set up show casing some tasty camp treats. These will include Charcoal Roasted BBQ Pork, Cowboy Stew, Dutch Oven Mac & Cheese, Tin Foil Sausage, Campfire Baked Potato Boats and Kebobs. Don’t worry they haven’t forgotten the basics. They will also have Frankfurters, Pie Iron Pizza and a variety of S’mores. Come try the great tastes of camping.

So come on out and enjoy the weekend at the Pennsylvania Adventure RV Expo and bring the family along and start making your memories this weekend. The Blair County Convention Center is located in Altoona about an hour from Johnstown. Take 219 north to US-22 east. Connect to I-99 north and take the Plank Road exit.
