It is hard to believe that this is already the last weekend of January. That means this will be the last weekend to take advantage of Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month promotions at the local resorts. To top it off, it appears that Mother Nature will be adding her own touch to the sloes on Friday with some snow. It will be another great weekend to get out and enjoy the slopes.
The forecast for the beginning of the weekend looks interesting with the amount of snow depending on where you are at. The forecast for the Johnstown area for this weekend will be another great one for skiing or snowboarding. Temperatures are going to be more like a Johnstown winter this weekend. High temperatures today should be in the mid-teens with high temperatures in the mid-twenties on Saturday and Sunday. Overnight lows are expected to be in the low teens tonight and Saturday and in the single digits on Sunday night. The wind chill could come into play on Saturday with winds gusting to near 25 mph. This would produce wind chills in the single digits on Saturday. These temperatures should allow for some great snow making at the resorts. Snow will be overspreading the area by late morning Friday and lasting into the night-time hours. Winter weather advisories are in effect for the areas around Johnstown with snow accumulations of three to six inches. Some areas just west of our area are under a Winter Storm Watch. Snow showers will be present Saturday morning. Skies should clear a little for Saturday afternoon and Sunday.
Blue Knob is open and ready for another great weekend. They are currently reporting cloudy skies with snow in the forecast at the resort. They have had about two inches of snow over the last 48 hours. They are expecting three to five inches of snow from the storm on Friday. They have 19 trails open along with two terrain parks. They continue to make snow on three of the closed trails and several open trails at the resort. They are reporting a base of 47 inches with groomed packed powder conditions. The snow tubing park will be opening for the weekend beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The Nordic Ski Center is listed also expected to be open this weekend. Blue Knob is located about 45 minutes east of Johnstown.
Hidden Valley is ready for the Family SnowBlast this weekend. They are currently reporting cloudy conditions at the resort. They have had 4 inches of fresh natural snow over the past 48 hours and snowmaking operations continue on the trails. Hidden Valley is under a winter weather advisory for Friday with three to five inches of snow expected. They currently have 21 runs open for skiing and two terrain parks on Continental with 13 features. They are expecting to open more trails this weekend as conditions improve. They are reporting a base of 17 to 38 inches. Currently they are reporting groomed packed powder conditions on the slopes. The Outback Snow Tubing Park will be opening at 6:00 p.m. Hidden Valley is located about 50 minutes southwest of Johnstown.
Mystic Mountain at Nemacolin Woodlands is currently open and ready to kick off the weekend with Neighbors and Friends night beginning at 4:00 p.m. As of this morning, they were reporting cloudy skies with a winter storm warning in effect for up to six more inches of snow through tonight. They were reporting a base of 30 to 40 inches with an four inches of new natural snow and 36 inches of new machine made snow. They are reporting all trails open with groomed granular conditions. They are also reporting the tubing park open. Mystic Mountain is under a Winter Storm Warning for Friday and could see eight to ten inches of snow.
Seven Springs is ready to offer some great skiing this weekend. They are reporting cloudy skies this morning. Snow making and grooming operations continue at the resort. They are reporting four inches of natural snow over the past 48 hours with an additional six inches of machine-made snow. Seven Springs is under a winter weather advisory for Friday but could see an additional six to eight inches of snow. They have 33 trails open for skiing and 4 terrain parks with 57 features. They are reporting a base of 14 to 36 inches with groomed powder conditions on the trails. The snow tubing park is open with 10 lanes in operation. They will be offering snow groomer rides this weekend but snow mobile and snow shoe tours have been suspended at this time. Seven Springs is located about 55 minutes southwest of Johnstown.
Tussey Mountain continues to operate with most of their trails now open. They are currently reporting sunny conditions at the resort. They have 5 of the 7 trails open at the resort with groomed packed powder conditions. They are currently reporting a base of 6 to 30 inches. The snow tubing park is open. Tussey Mountain is located about an hour and 40 minutes northeast of Johnstown. Tussey Mountain is expecting one to three inches of snow on Friday.
Whitetail near Mercersburg has another great weekend planned. They are currently reporting cloudy skies at this time. They have had a dusting of natural snow over the past 48 hours with an additional eight to ten inches of machine-made snow. Whitetail is expecting to get one to three inches of new snow on Friday. They have 21 trails open as well as the Jib Junction and Park Place 101 Terrain Parks with 27 features. They have a base of 26 to 30 inches with packed powder conditions. They also have the snow tubing park open with 11 lanes in operation for the weekend. Whitetail is located just a little over two hours southeast of Johnstown.
Wisp Resort in McHenry Maryland is ready for the weekend also. They are currently reporting sunny conditions this morning. They have had four inches of fresh natural snow over the last 48 hours with four inches of machine-made snow added overnight to some trails. Wisp is under a Winter Storm Watch for Friday with an additional eight to ten inches of snow expected. They have 25 trails and two terrain parks with 11 features open. They are reporting a base of 15 inches with groomed conditions. The snow tubing park is also open with 9 lanes in operation. The Mountain Coaster and Ice Skating Rink are also open this weekend. However, the Nordic Ski Center is closed currently. Wisp is located about an hour and forty-five minutes south of Johnstown.
So get out and enjoy the slopes this weekend. Get some recreation time to reduce that stress and have some fun. Bundle up and stay warm.
