It’s the second weekend of January and the ski resorts are in open for normal winter hours with a lot going on this weekend. Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month is in full swing. And even though the temperatures are predicted to be quite warm for this time of year, snow is back in the forecast by next week. This is a great time to get out and enjoy the slopes.
The forecast for the Johnstown area for this weekend could be the fly in the ointment for snow sports opportunities. Temperatures are expected to be well above normal and rain showers could be falling throughout the weekend with the daylight hours on Saturday being the exception. High temperatures today should be near fifty with the high on Saturday and Sunday around sixty. Overnight lows are expected to be in the mid-forties tonight and in the upper forties on Saturday and back into the upper thirties for Sunday. The forecast for today, Friday, is calling for a 90% chance of rain showers throughout the day. Cloudy skies will prevail on Saturday giving way to showers overnight and throughout the day on Sunday. The chance of precipitation on Sunday is about 60%. But snow is back in the forecast for Monday. Remember that the weather conditions at the resorts may vary from those in Johnstown. Usually temperatures will be a little colder and snow amounts can be higher.
Blue Knob is open and ready for another great weekend. The latest update on trail conditions from the resort was from Thursday morning. They are currently reporting rain showers at the resort. There has been no significant snowfall over the last 24 hours. They had 23 trails open yesterday and 2 terrain parks. They are reporting a base of 40 inches with groomed packed powder conditions. The snow tubing park will be opening for the weekend beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 4 and at this time the Nordic Ski Center is listed as open. Blue Knob is located about 45 minutes east of Johnstown.
Hidden Valley has a very busy weekend planned. They are currently reporting cloudy conditions at the resort. Currently snowmaking operations have been shut down. They currently have 23 runs open for skiing, which is down 6 trails from yesterday, and 3 terrain park with 20 features. They are reporting a base of 20 to 30 inches although the base may be less in areas where snowmaking is not conducted. Currently they are reporting machine groomed conditions on the slopes. The Outback Snow Tubing Park will be opening at 6:00 p.m. Hidden Valley is located about 50 minutes southwest of Johnstown.
Mystic Mountain at Nemacolin Woodlands is currently open and ready to kick off the weekend with Neighbors and Friends night beginning at 4:00 p.m. The last snow report from the resort came out on Sunday, January 6. They were reporting a base of 24 to 30 inches. They are reporting all six trails open with groomed packed powder conditions. They are also reporting the tubing park and the Nordic ski area open.
Seven Springs is ready for the 96.1 KISS-FM Frak Show Takeover on Saturday. They are reporting rain showers this morning. Snow making operations have been suspended at this time but the resort does continue to groom some of the trails and terrain parks. They will have 37 trails open for skiing and 4 terrain parks with 61 features. They are reporting a base of 14 to 30 inches with groomed granular conditions on the trails. The snow tubing park is open with 11 lanes in operation. They will be offering snow groomer rides this weekend. Seven Springs is located about 55 minutes southwest of Johnstown.
Tussey Mountain continues to operate with limited trails. They are currently reporting cloudy conditions at the resort. They have 3 of the 7 trails open at the resort. The snow tubing park is open. Tussey Mountain is located about an hour and 40 minutes northeast of Johnstown.
Whitetail near Mercersburg is open and ready to present this year’s first Ollie Contest tonight. They are reporting cloudy skies this morning. They have 20 trails open as well as the Jib junction Terrain Park with 17 features. They have a base of 13 to 17 inches with loose granular conditions. They also have the snow tubing park open with 10 lanes in operation for the weekend. Whitetail is located just a little over two hours southeast of Johnstown.
Wisp Resort in McHenry Maryland is ready for the first Master the Mountain Weekend in the area this weekend. They are currently reporting sunny conditions this morning. They have 26 trails open which is down five trails from yesterday and three terrain parks with 16 features open. They are reporting a base of 14 inches with groomed conditions. The snow tubing park is also open with 9 lanes in operation. The Mountain Coaster and Ice Skating Rink are also open this weekend. The Nordic Ski Center is open and reporting a base of 6 to 8 inches. Wisp is located about an hour and forty-five minutes south of Johnstown.
So get out and enjoy the slopes this weekend. Get some recreation time to reduce that stress and have some fun. But be prepared for some rain showers throughout the weekend.
