Johnny Winter was recognized Rolling Stone in 1968 when they said he was "the hottest item outside Janis Joplin". In 1969 he signed to Columbia Records bringing a fresh new style to classic blues, which would pave the path for upcoming rock artists for years to come. One of the most respected singers and guitar players in rock some feel he is responsible in part for building a musical bridge between British blues-rock and American Southern Rock.
Winter is not anly famous for his electryfying electric slide guitar, he is also a vocal bluesman from way back. Visit www.johnnywinter.net to learn more. Johnny was born in 1944 in Beaumont, Texas and makes his home in New England.
A self professed bluesman, Winter points to the high moments in his life as having received 3 Grammy awards for his work with the band "Muddy Waters". Winter recognizes Chuck Berry as an early influener regarding his style.
"Chuck Berry was the first guitarist I listened to," he says.
But it has not all been easy for Winter who recently overcame a drug and alcohol problem.
His advice to young performers trying to break in and make it in the music world is not to give up.
"Just know that it's not easy. But you have to keep at it," he says.
Given the choice, Winter prefers a live audience to a recording studio.
"Playing live...I like to be close to the people when I play."
