The work done by the makeup team was so exceptional that Bad Grandpa was awarded an Academy Award nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Stephen Prouty is the individual who received the nomination on the film's behalf.
In a recent featurette we obtained from Paramount Pictures, Bad Grandpa star Johnny Knoxville talked about the work the makeup team did when it came to bringing Irving alive.
"Tony Gardner and his guys did the makeup for the TV show and they have always done it for us. Its amazing, and the painting process is really where it comes alive.
"They are real artists, they're amazing. I was nose-to-nose with people [and they didn't even know it was me]," Knoxville said.
Bad Grandpa director Jeff Tremaine discussed the different versions and evolution of the makeup itself and attributed a lot of the film's success to how believable Johnny was as Irving Zisman.
"The makeup has evolved so much. If you look at our first version of Irving and then our second version of Irving and third version of Irving, the makeup keeps getting better and better. We could not have done the first incarnation of Irving.
"It used to be almost a mask of what they put on. It was like a whole hood piece and then facial pieces, now it's all individual little pieces, so each little thing moves. His throat moves, his cheeks move, his eye brows and everything has expression. The success of the movie is 100% accredited to him being believable and they made it so good," Tremaine said.
If you haven't had the chance to see the film, you're in for a treat. It is available now on digital and will become available at retail on Jan. 28th.
