If you missed the Avonova concert in Oakland on May 3rd, and the St. Cyprian's Church concert in San Francisco on May 10th, you missed some rockin' good times! This is Johnny Harper's 'Life is a Carnival' tribute to The Band who debuted at Winterland in San Francisco 45 years ago. The music of The Band is ingrained in our culture so intricately that you probably don't even realize you are humming or singing along with it as it plays on the radio even today as if it is brand new. The title of the tribute is just one song you are familiar with, but add 'Up on Cripple Creek', 'W.S. Walcott Medicine Show', 'Stage Fright', and 'Daniel's Sacred Harp' to the list. Johnny played 18 of The Band's more famous and lesser known songs in the manner they were meant to be played, uplifting everyone who has come to hear them.
There are 2 more venues on this tribute tour, and on these 2 venues he has added 2 more of The Band's songs. One concert is coming up on this Memorial Day Weekend at the Sebastopol Community Center: Fri. May 23rd at 8 PM. 390 Morris St. (707) 823 1511, presented by North Bay Hootenanny. Admission is $15.00, and you can reserve them at www.seb.org, or by calling the above number. What a great way to spend Memorial Day Weekend! Start with the concert on Friday, head out to the Russian River on Saturday, tour the Sonoma Wine Country on Sunday, and you still have Monday to recover!!!
Oh well, If you've already made other plans, you can still catch the last concert on the tour, and be in as gorgeous a place as the Sonoma Wine Country. On Friday, June 13th Johnny Harper's tribute to The Band will be at Don Quixote's International Music Call. They're at 6275 HWY 9 in Felton, not too far from Santa Cruz. Concert starts at 8 PM, tickets are $12.00 in advance, $15.00 at the door. For tickets and reservations call (831) 603 2294, or go to www.donquixotesmusic.com. What a fine weekend that can be too! Start with the concert on Friday, go to Felton's Roaring Camp and Big Trees Railroad on Saturday and take a ride on a real steam train (they have a bar-b-que, a general store and more there, too), and on Sunday, head out to the Beach and Boardwalk at Santa Cruz. The concert is very kid friendly, so it's a family weekend trip for sure!
Johnny Harper's core band is his guitar, Neal Roston, keyboards, Patrick McKenna, bass, and Rick Alegria, drummer. They all contribute beautifully to the vocals. For these concerts honoring The Band, Johnny's added some fantastic horns, and a violin as well. They are all professional musicians who have been pedigreed with the likes of Maria Muldaur, The Drifters, Asleep At The Wheel, Big Joe Turner, Katie Webster, Mary Wells and more. The result is an evening of fantastic music that will get you dancing in the aisles!!!
Don't miss these last two concerts in tribute to The Band. They are well worth the price, the memories, the tapping toes, clapping hands and big ol' smiles on your face as you wind down at the end of the evening!
