Johnny Depp signed on to portray infamous Boston mobster in biopic

In a role that's a bit of a departure from this Tanto character in the "Lone Ranger," Johnny Depp has signed on to portray notorious Boston mobster James 'Whitey' Bulger, reports Sky News.

The film, called "Black Mass," starts shooting in May and details the life and eventual arrest of the godfather of Boston organized crime.

Bulger worked with the FBI as an informant, ratting out competing mobsters in exchange for protection, writes Boston.com, but was arrested in 2011 after the partnership unraveled.

In July 2011, he plead not guilt to 48 charges, including 19 counts of murder, extortion, money laundering, obstruction of justice, perjury, narcotics distribution and weapons violations.

Bulger is still awaiting trial.

Depp has played infamous mafiosos in the past, including his portrayal of John Dillinger in "Public Enemies" and an undercover FBI agent infiltrating the mob in "Donnie Brasco."
