Fans waiting for 21 Jump Street to hit theaters in Scottsdale in March 2012 had a bit of news on Monday. Coming Soon reported that Johnny Depp had agreed to do a small cameo appearance in the new film based on his former television series.
Between 1987 and 1991, Johnny Depp appeared on Fox's 21 Jump Street as Tom Hanson, an undercover cop that infiltrated both high schools and colleges to take down criminals. The series was a hit for the actor, and it helped launch his career.
This new film stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as the two officers that were the focus. Hill has taken on the role of Douglas Penhall, played by Peter Deluise on the series, while Channing Tatum has taken on Depp's role. Ice Cube will play the man in charge of the undercover crew in this film.
21 Jump Street is currently in production in New Orleans, Louisiana. The possibility of the film was first brought up in 2008 by Jonah Hill, when he took over the rewriting of the script. He is also executive producer of the film. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs are directing the film.
