Johnny Depp commits to two new movies

Variety reported on March 6 that actor Johnny Depp has signed on for his next two projects.

His current film, The Lone Ranger (from Disney, with the same Jerry Bruckheimer/Gore Verbinski team that produced Pirates of the Caribbean) is now in post-production and is scheduled for a July 3rd release. A trailer for the movie, starring Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger, debuted during the SuperBowl in January. Disney has spent nearly $250 million on the movie and is predicting it will be one of their biggest hits for 2013.

First on Depp’s list for upcoming projects is Transcendence, which will be the directorial debut of The Dark Knight’s cinematographer Wally Pfister. Alcon Entertainment will produce, and the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. The film’s plot is being kept secret, but it is rumored to be about a scientist who uploads his brain into a supercomputer.

The second film, from Cross Creek, will be Black Mass, to be directed b Barry Levinson. This film is based on the book Black Mass: The True Story of the Unholy Alliance between the FBI and the Irish Mob, written by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerald O’Neill, and which follows the life of Boston crime boss Whitey Bulger.
