NASSAU, Bahamas - John Travolta has dropped extortion charges saying he does not want to return to The Bahamas to testify a second time at trial and wants to put everything behind him.
"The long-pending status of this matter continued to take a heavy emotional toll on my family, causing us to conclude that it was finally time to put this matter behind us," Travolta said. "Therefore, after much reflection I concluded that it was in my family's best interest for me not to voluntarily return to The Bahamas to testify a second time at trial."
It was in January 2009 when Travolta’s son Jett, 16-years-old suffered a seizure and collapsed at the family’s home on Grand Bahama Island. Travolta said his son was autistic, confirming speculation that had swirled for years. The developmental disorder is frequently accompanied by seizures.
The actor said he performed CPR on the teen after a nanny alerted him and his wife, actress Kelly Preston. When paramedic Tarino Lightbourne arrived Travolta refused to sign an initial consent form because he wanted his son flown to Florida for treatment. In the end, Jett was taken to a Bahamian hospital
During the first trial of extortion charges against Lightbourne, and his attorney, politician Pleasant Bridgewater, Travolta told the jury that Lightbourne said if he did not pay $25 million, he would use a consent document against the actor and threatened to sell stories to the news media suggesting the movie star was at fault in the death of his 16-year-old son.
The charges were dropped by Prosecutor Neil Braithwaite after submitting a motion to drop the case just as a retrial was about to start for the two defendants.
"The Travolta family has said that this matter has caused them unbelievable stress and pain and they wish to put this whole thing behind them," Braithwaite told the court after a jury had been picked to hear the case.
Travolta, 56, and his wife Kelly Preston, 47, are parents to Ella Bleu, 10-years-old. They recently announced that Preston is pregnant with a son.
"It’s impossible to keep a secret ... especially one as wonderful as this," they say in a statement. "We want to be the first to share this great news with everyone that we are expecting a new addition to our family.
Love, John, Kelly and Ella"
