John Thornton presented with highest Kiwanis award

John Thornton was today presented with the highest award the organization can give to a member by the University Kiwanis Club of Wichita Falls, Texas.

Thornton, a Wichita Falls dentist and longtime Kiwanian, was presented with the George F. Hixson Fellowship for his community service over many years to help the youth of the world.

He has been involved in the Annual Kiwanis Pancake Festival for many years serving as one of the leaders of the Better Batter Boys. His other sevice involvements include the Hotter N Hell Rest Stop Coordinator, the Wichita Falls State Hospital bingo program, the Kiwanis Park Concession, the MSU Fantasy ofLights Fill The Boot Program, a Bug Program member and the Christmas Shoe Project at schools in the Wichita Falls area.

Also active in his church, he has performed many duties of service at First Presbyterian Church on Taft Street across from Midwestern State University. Some of those duties have included serving on Session and as an usher. He has also participated in a Thursday morning Bible study course at he church.

He has also been a devoted husband to wife Yvonne Bohuslav Thornton and caring father to children Josh, who recently completed a master's degree at Texas Tech, and Lindsey who grauated from Texas A&M and works for Apple Computers.

A past winner of the Texoma's Best Dentist Award, Thornton has been a respected member of the dental community for many years.

The award is named after Hixson who was the first International Kiwanis President. Hixson, who served from 1916 to 1918 holds the distinction of being the only leader to serve two terms as Kiwanis International President.

In his spare time, Thornton enjoys the great outdoors through hunting and fishing from the United States to Canada.
