John Tesh and his Big Band play War Memorial Auditorium

You may remember John Tesh as the pretty blonde boy sitting calmly and good-naturedly next to Mary Hart; Remember her? Known for those gams she took about a million bucks of insurance out on? Yes, that John Tesh. I remember thinking that I'd bet he is a nice, warm man, just by the way he handled himself on the TV set during his years at Entertainment Tonight. And I remember him leaving, to follow his dream as a composer and pianist. And that's where he is today, playing the concert circuit, most recently at our own War Memorial Auditorium.

From pithy comments coming to us from an unknown voice from backstage before the show, to Tesh himself stirring up romantic trouble with members of the audience, to big band Christmas music from days gone by, to Tesh's daughter dancing onstage, it was a pleasant evening full of laughter, beautiful big band music, including a great horn section, the fairly pleasant singing voice of Tesh, along with his wonderful piano playing and a feeling of camaraderie between former Nashville resident Tesh and the audience.

But what I noticed most of all, as did Tesh, was the sound emanating from that stage into the orchestra section, up to the balconies and beyond, from the unbelievably wonderful acoustics of the auditorium. That, and the adorable five year old little girl Tesh lured onto the stage with a promise of a prize (turned out to be candy in a Christmas stocking), where he proceeded to unsuccessfully try to get the precious girl to sing, play the piano or dance. She did none of the above, but still managed to adorably stand there until he gave her the okay to go back to Mom.

And that's the kind of evening you can expect with Tesh. Pleasant, light-hearted, warm and involved. Oddly enough, it's also the kind of events you can expect at the War Memorial. Like Tesh, the theatre is intimate, warm and easy to be (or get) around, with not a bad seat in the place, neither visually nor musically.

I urge you to attend one of the fabulous concerts at Nashville's War Memorial, if you haven't ever; it's part of Nashville history, a gorgeous building and the perfect concert venue. If you, like me, went as a child, go again – believe me, now you can appreciate its beauty and function. Take your kids, take your loved one, but go, because the War Memorial ROCKS!! Coming up at the War Memorial Auditorium:

02/13 Tommy Emmanuel

02/20 Buddy Guy

03/07 American Dream Tour

03/20 Southern Soul

04/12 Colin and Brad
