During the calligraphy workshop I attended this weekend with John Stevens Sensei, two copies of his re-issued gem, “Sacred Calligraphy of the East” were offered for sale. I immediately snapped up one!
The book, originally released in 1981 and again in 1988 and 1995, is divided into easy to understand sections and lavishly illustrated with photographs. The truth is, the book is treasure trove of information. For aspiring calligraphers, the book is must read and a must have. For the student of sacred writing, here is example after example after example.
The sections are:
SIDDHAM: SCRIPT OF GODS AND BUDDHAS
THE SACRED TIBETAN LETTERS
SHAKYO: SUTRA COPYING
ZENSHO: ZEN CALLIGRPAHY
EPILOGUE (or, Where to Obtain the Necessary Equipment)
I also want to note that detailed brush stroke guides are included when the author discusses particular calligraphy.
The best way to sum up this wonderful book is to include one of the sayings in the book: “Calligraphy is a picture of the mind” (Chinese saying). On the same pages is Munan’s (1603-1676) calligraphy, Kokoro, which means both heart and mind.
The book is available now from your local Independent bookseller.
