John Smith: Americana heart & soul

A direct descendant and namesake of the Irish bore new world traveler John Smith (yes, the original John Smith who romanced and won the heart of Pocahontas) John Smith is traveling from Trempealeau, Wisc. to perform at the Doverlaff Mansion in Portland, Ore.

Smith and his music were first introduced to me at the Sisters Folk Festival. Every year a songwriter’s camp takes place days before the festival and Smith spun his musical web over my heart along with notable music legends like Steve Seskin and Christine Kane.

Lyrically, rhythmically and melodically Smith’s songs are like "old world Irish" folk songs that speak about love and sorrow, joy and pain in an every man and every woman American kind of way.

Listen to his touching vocals sing about the heartache and tears shed when you lose a parent to Alzheimer’s disease, “From His Window.” (click this link for music video)

Other memorable tunes "Kickin’ This Stone," "I Will Fly" or "Part-Time Angels," a song written about John’s real life experience of saving two boys from drowning in the river will give inspiration and true reasons to listen for more. Go to the concert and hear for yourself $15 donation at the door. Be sure to request his song, “Pedal To The Metal.”

John Smith concert (canceled due to tragedy) Keith Greeninger will perform Sunday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Doverlaff Tike Room, 7326 SE Woodward Street, Portland, Ore.
