For some success, means a large salary and a big position. But for others it means a chance to make a difference in the lives of young people.
John Rusnak, the founding band director at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in South Florida has enjoyed success as a band director. Thousands of young people have gone through his program over the past 24 years. Many have gone on to successful musical careers. The band has won many awards over the years.
"Kids love to be part of our program. We set high standards and the kids meet those standards. The kids love the family atmosphere of the band. They make lifelong friends in our program. Also, they get a chance to perform and many young people enjoy playing music. We offer many opportunities to play music."
The band includes concert, marching and jazz bands. And these bands have won awards. There is also a successful winter guard program.
"I love being part of this band and I enjoy performing," said Andrew Guerrero, who plays base guitar in the jazz band.
