John of God bringing his Healing Gift to Toronto – Part 1 of 5

John of God, born João Teixeira de Faria and known worldwide as an amazing healer is coming to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from March 15 to 17, 2013.

As a medium who is dedicated to healing others, John of God said it is not he who should be praised.

“God is the healer. I am simply the vessel,” he clarified.

João was a poor boy growing up in Campo Grande (Matto Grosso), Brazil. At an early age, he was clairvoyant and as such, was able to predict events and outcomes before they occurred. Due to this ability, he saved his own mother and himself from a devastating storm with massive flooding.

At 8 years old, he learned to be a tailor. At 16, he traveled to various towns seeking work but was unsuccessful. Exhausted and hungry, he stopped at the bank of a river where he liked to swim. It was then that he spotted a beautiful woman. He talked to her all afternoon and into the next morning about his future as a healer and was drawn back to the riverbank the next morning to look for her again. He did not find her but was instead astonished to see a brilliant shaft of light where she had been.

Then he heard her voice telling him to go to a church in Campo Grande. She said he would be expected. Shortly after he arrived, he fainted and upon returning to consciousness, a group of people stood around him claiming that the spirit of King Solomon had overtaken him. While he was unconscious, more than 50 people were healed. He would later learn that the woman he’d met was St. Rita of Cassia.

This experience thrust João on a journey to seek spiritual instruction and eventually led to his decision to dedicate his life to healing others. He does this at the Casa de Dom Inácio in Abadiânia, Brazil where he is ‘incorporated’ with such entities as St. Ignatius Loyola, Oswaldo Cruz, who was a famous Brazilian doctor known for eradicating yellow fever, Dr. Augusto de Almeida, a surgeon and spiritual master who performs many of the surgeries, and Dr. Jose Valdivino, a surgeon.

In a full trance state, John of God said he has “no recall of the work performed” through him. He has been doing this now for 43 years, allowing some 30 spirits to heal through him.

“When this happens, I am sleeping,” he told Gail Thackray, a Los Angeles resident who interviewed João for a documentary called João de Deus – Just A Man. “I am unconscious.”

“John of God says that he actually leaves his body while a spirit works through him," said Gail, who is a medium and healer in her own right. "He says he doesn’t remember anything; rather he just goes to sleep. Still, such incorporation is supposedly very taxing on the body.”

About 40,000 people from around the world come to the Casa each year seeking healings and many of these have been captured on film. When asked if he ever watched them, he said, “I do not watch because I do not like to see blood.”

In actuality, any physical surgeries he performs while incorporated, produce little blood. As well, the person being healed feels no pain and no infections have ever resulted.

Healings are offered from Wednesday to Friday at the Casa and Gail explained that the “incorporated spirit” decides whether someone needs a spiritual or physical healing.

“Spiritual healing normally takes place invisibly. This could be done just spontaneously passing by John of God, but sometimes the spirit prescribes people a spiritual “surgery” or intervention. This is no more than sitting in a type of meditation while spiritual healing is done on the person. Of course the results can be spectacular with people’s tumors completely gone or internal stitches appearing.”

But even on his off days, John of God does not rest.

“He travels to other parts of Brazil to visit others who cannot make the trip,” Gail said. “In addition to this, he runs many charitable endeavors including soup kitchens that daily feed thousands of local poor all over Brazil. This leaves little time for his normal family life as a husband, father and rancher. Even as he dedicates his life to his work, he says he is blessed to have this mission from God.”

In the documentary about him, it was noted that João has also “helped send some kids to college” and will come to help anyone who calls him.

“This is not charity,” said João. “This is a mission.”
