NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" cast hosted a retirement party for Sergeant John Munch during their Oct. 16th episode. This didn't come as a surprise for fans of the popular detective show because at the end of last week's episode, Captain Cragen told Detective Olivia Benson, "Munch put in his paper."
So after more than two decades on the job, Sergeant John Munch played by Richard Belzer, 69, has finally put in his papers. Even with the retirement party and the farewells, it is likely that fans will see the beloved sergeant on Law & Order again.
It is not unusual to see an actor appear on other television shows as different people, but Belzer’s iconic role as Munch is one of the longest-running characters on television. He has appeared as Munch in nine different television shows. This is more than any other fictional character.
In spite of Munch putting in his papers and his precinct giving him a retirement party, the Huffington Post reports that Belzer is expected to make recurring appearances.
Happy retirement, John Munch!
