Recently McEnroe won the PowerShares Series season ending title. PowerShares is a competitive circuit made up of tennis legends like Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. McEnroe has not had much time to celebrate as he is caught in the spotlight of many negative stories in the media.
Back in July, McEnroe’s 27 year old son Kevin was arrested in Manhattan on drug charges. Kevin McEnroe was allegedly in a drug transaction involving six clear plastic bags of assorted drugs including cocaine. He was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Kevin’s mother is actress Tatum O’Neal, ex wife of John McEnroe with whom she has three children. O’Neal had her own run in with the law in 2008 when she was arrested for allegedly buying crack cocaine.
Drugs was again the topic in Chrissie Hynde, lead singer of The Pretenders, came out with her recollection of smoking marijuana with McEnroe while he was actively competing at Wimbledon in the mid eighties.
Hynde said: ‘Way back in the days when he was doing Wimbledon, he would always call me because he knew I had pot. He used to come around and hang out.”
McEnroe has admitted to using drugs when he was married to O’Neal.
And the hits keep coming as an “insider” has leaked to the news that the “The Johnny Mac Tennis Project” is not helping the disadvantaged as advertised. The charity is reportedly helping elite players whose lesson and travel costs are paid to Sportime, the for-profit business that runs the John McEnroe Tennis Academy.
“It’s really a scam,” said the insider. “All the money goes to the for-profit business. Now we get reimbursed for our good deeds.”
The source did admit that McEnroe has donated no money to the charity and is on the board of directors. A spokesperson for Sportime said that McEnroe has donated his time and has always supported the charity.
John McEnroe has made a lot of hits on the tennis court and it looks like the news is hitting back.
