Whole Foods Market is a supermarket chain based in Austin, Texas and has been ranked among one of the most socially responsible businesses in the country. The company, founded by John Mackey in 1980 has currently has over 300 location. Mackey, who is the Whole Foods acting CEO, has been under fire for stating that Obamacare is a form of socialism. Mackey clarified that statement in an interview on NPR that aired Wednesday. He instead called Obamacare fascism.
“Technically speaking, it’s more like fascism. Socialism is where the government owns the means of production. In fascism, the government doesn’t own the means of production, but they do control it — and that’s what’s happening with our health care programs and these reforms.”
The self-described libertarian stated that he sees room to cooperate with the current White House administration on trying to change the way America eats. “People in America are addicted to sugar, and to fat and to salt,” Mackey stated. “Food is intensely pleasurable, and people are afraid that if they change the way they eat, they’ll stop having pleasure.”
The author of the new book, Conscious Capitalism, has played a key role in bringing organic food into the mainstream. Mackey believes businesses should try to change the perception that corporations are “primarily selfish and greedy.”
Mackey believes his product will be able to stand the boycotts from many in his “liberal customer base”, boycotts he has faced in the past.
