John Lennon-inspired initiative for music education to be launched tonight

The Playing For Change Foundation (http://www.playingforchange.org), together with the support of Theatre Within (http://theatrewithin.org), will announce the launch of the Power to the People campaign for music education in schools tonight as part of Theatre Within's 30th Annual John Lennon Tribute concert at the Beacon Theatre in New York.

The program, supported by Yoko Ono,  hopes to raise awareness and funds to develop Playing For Change Foundation's music education programs in schools around the world. A portion of proceeds will also benefit Theatre Within's mission to produce events to benefit charities and social causes.

The tribute concert, which benefits the Playing For Change Foundation, features Jackson Browne, Patti Smith, Cyndi Lauper, Aimee Mann, Keb' Mo', Joan Osborne, Martin Sexton and others.

The aim of the Power to the People campaign, according to a press release, is "to promote peace by engaging artists and audiences to contribute to music education programs on every continent." Proceeds will help build music schools, support teachers and music programs, purchase instruments, and connect schools across borders.

One of the campaign's central events will be Playing For Change Day on May 7, 2011. On that day, professional musicians will join amateur performers at concerts, local events and grassroots gatherings around the world for a coordinated call to raise funds for music education programs. Audiences will be asked to make a text pledge or online donation.
