John Lennon was remembered in a moving tribute at his star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame Sunday, December 8, 2013, on the 33rd anniversary of his death. Many fans gathered at the celebration, organized by peace activist Jerry Rubin and Breakfast With the Beatles radio show host Chris Carter to commemorate John and pay homage to his music and his life. Pat Tyson has sent us her report of the event and pictures for our readers.

Of particular interest to our readers and those familiar with the Imagine Mosaic in New York, she announced that Gary dos Santos, the “Mayor of Strawberry Fields” had passed away a few days ago of leukemia. Many will recall how protective Gary was over the mosaic and how he spent much time and energy arranging the flower petals into various shapes at the mosaic in honor of John. He had many moving conversations with fans and friends there. (Read more about Gary here.) He was to say that even if he didn't make it to Strawberry Fields on December 8, he would have "the brother" (John) with him.

Pat Tyson wrote of the Lennon gathering, “There were several tributes by fans, young and old. Jerry Rubin introduced Chris Carter, who welcomed all of the fans. Chris also welcomed Village Pizza, who delivered several pizzas to the crowd, noting with humor that their slogan is ‘Give Pizza A Chance’!

“Jerry called upon the young fans to come to the microphone. A pair of sisters, Blanca Sunshine and Clarissa Rain, who are 12 and 13 years old respectively, were there, who are Beatles fans…as is their mother, who was also in the crowd. Clarissa said her favorite Beatles song is ‘Hey Jude.’ Blanca admired John Lennon’s message of peace.

“Zane Suarez sang ‘Happiness Is A Warm Gun’ accompanied by Scott on drums. He also did an interesting (and different) interpretation of ‘She Loves You.’ Nicole Alexander read a beautiful poem to John (which she wrote) entitled ‘I’m Only Sleeping.’”

There was a celebratory spirit at the gathering, to honor John’s life rather than mourn his passing.

Upcoming events: Jerry Rubin’s 70th birthday party will be celebrated December 11th on the Santa Monica Pier and fans are invited. Chris Carter will be the emcee and Michelle Phillips will light the 70 candles on the cake.

Also, on Sunday, February 9, 2014, the 50th anniversary of The Beatles arriving in the U.S.A. will be commemorated in front of Capitol Records. Each of the Beatles stars on the Walk of Fame will be decorated, and fans are invited to join the celebration.
