John Fogerty 'Rides Again' with the Blue Ridge Rangers

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Fogerty revisits an early highlight of his post-Creedence Clearwater Revival solo career with the Aug. 31 release of The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again.

In fact, Fogerty’s first solo album following CCR’s breakup in 1972 was entitled The Blue Ridge Rangers--though the group was actually Fogerty playing all the instruments on covers of classic country fare including Hank Williams’ “Jambalaya” and Red Foley’s “Hearts of Stone”--both of which became pop hits for Fogerty.

The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again is similar in scope, except that Fogerty has employed a real band made up of drummer Kenny Aronoff, guitarist Billy Burnette, fiddler/mandolinist Jason Mowery, keyboardist/guitarist Matt Nolen, guitarist Hunter Perrin, bassist David Santos and pedal steel player James Pennebaker. The first single is a duet with Bruce Springsteen on the Everly Brothers hit “When Will I Be Loved.”

Other covers include Rick Nelson’s “Garden Party” (with assistance from Eagles Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit), Buck Owens’ “I Don’t Care (Just As Long As You Love Me),” the Kendalls’ “Heaven’s Just A Sin Away” and Pat Boone’s “Moody River.”

The album, incidentally, is being released via Verve Forecast on Fogerty’s “Fortunate Son” imprint label, the name, of course, coming from CCR’s 1969 hit. Fogerty and band will debut the album live at a free outdoor concert at New York's South Street Seaport on Sept. 2. He’ll perform on "Late Show with David Letterman" the next night and on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Sept. 8.
