Last February, Congressman John Fleming (R-LA) attained some level of notoriety after reading about an "$8 billion abortionplex" on The Onion.
Apparently, Fleming did not know the article was satire and expressed his outrage at the fictional proposal on his Facebook page.
Today, Fleming continues to struggle with separating fact from reality.
During a Tuesday appearance with Family Research Council president Tony Perkins, Fleming ranted about the recently approved UN Arms Trade Treaty.
The treaty as proposed is designed to prevent the sale of weapons to human rights violators and target black market arms sales. Fleming, on the other hand, expressed a belief that it is actually part of a liberal conspiracy to overturn the Second Amendment.
"This is a dangerous thing when it comes to the Second Amendment. People need to understand that there is an end-run around the Second Amendment that is available to the Senate and I do think President Obama and others do support this."
In addition to not understanding (or being apathetic to) the true nature of the U.N. treaty, this also indicates that Fleming does not understand (or is apathetic to) how the Constitution works.
As if that were not enough, Fleming continued on that the treaty could just as easily be used to prevent parents from spanking their children.
"That could potentially be up for a ratification of a treaty with other nations. So that if you for instance spanked your child, you could be in violation of a UN treaty and a law created as such."
Only three nations voted against the treaty: Iran, Syria, and North Korea. This is the company that Congressman Fleming would have the United States keep.
