Although the game publisher confirmed the news today, it was originally made public on the WWE's flagship show, "RAW," this past Monday.
“It is truly an honor and privilege to serve as the WWE 2K15 cover Superstar,” Cena said in the press release. “2K has a tremendous history of sports simulation games and cover athletes, including Michael Jordan, Kevin Durant, LeBron James and of course, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. I look forward to carrying the flag for WWE 2K15 and introducing the incredible next-generation of WWE gaming to the WWE Universe.”
Cena, a 15-time World Heavyweight Champion during his 12-year run with the company, will be the first performer to grace the WWE game cover as the series makes its transition to the PlayStation 4 and XBox One.
The second game in the series under the direction of 2K Sports, last year's "WWE 2K14" was praised by critics and fans alike for its attention to detail and amount of content.
With the WWE's biggest star on this year's game, 2K expects the bar to raise the bar again.
“With his outstanding record of accomplishments in WWE and beyond, the iconic John Cena is the perfect WWE Superstar to represent the WWE 2K franchise as we launch the first-ever WWE video game on next-generation consoles,” Chris Snyder, Vice President of Marketing at 2K said in the press release. “Along with monumental gameplay, graphical and presentation improvements, we are confident that Cena will drive ‘WWE 2K15’ to cement its spot in history as the greatest WWE video game released to date.”
“WWE 2K15” is set for release on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4™ and PS3™ on October 28, 2014 in North America and October 31, 2014 internationally.
