An exciting thing about San Francisco that dazzles both the local residents and international tourists is our plethora of fun, unusual family owned businesses. They're crown jewels that provide authentic old world cuisines and cutting edge new ideas to the general public on main street. One must-see is John Campbell's Irish Bakery at 5625 Geary Blvd. in the Richmond District. John is a member of The Order of the Master Baker from Belfast, Ireland and he built a pantheon to showcase both traditional staples and new fun things. Everyone is welcome there and he puts a variety of samples at the front counter and encourages people to try new things.
John brings expert craftsmanship and high quality ingredients to old classics in the North of Ireland such as Brown Bread, Soda Bread, scones, tea cookies, sweet tarts, Shepherd's Pie, and pasties. The holidays are coming and so he has traditional favorites such as Plum Pudding and Mincemeat. For Halloween he made Barm Brack, Ireland's traditional Halloween bread. Additionally, he creates fun new things to make the shop cutting edge. The bakery is also a retail shop that sells candy, tea and specialty beverages straight from Ireland.
He plans to offer Irish griddle breads, a traditional favorite, which will add to the bakery's nostalgia.
Pig and Whistle is an English bar and restaurant and they sell certain things from John's bakery that are popular in England, such as Shepherd's Pie, beef pasties, baked sausage rolls and french bread. John also makes their hamburger buns which are called Baps. Pig and Whistle is located at 2801 Geary Blvd. near Masonic Avenue.
