John Butler Trio launches their next chapter (spring tour preview)

What do you do if you’re a multi-platinum artist, coming off your most successful album? Blow the whole thing up and start from scratch, of course! What may seem like an odd way to reach even greater heights for most people, makes perfect sense to John Butler. Armed with a new line-up, a new label and one of the most eagerly anticipated albums of 2010, the John Butler Trio launches the U.S. leg of their April Uprising tour this week in New York City.

Ironically, the journey to JBT’s future began with a trip through John Butler’s past. “Who do you think we are”, Australia’s TV phenomenon that traces the ancestral roots of its rich and famous brethren, awakened a new creative journey for the songwriter. Channeling the roots of his Bulgarian past, John decided to make the change to new drummer Nicky Bomba and bassist Byron Luiters in June, 2009.
The band emerged from Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne with April Uprising, dropping April 6th, 2010, a fiercely personal recording which will undoubtedly bring JBT into the realm of bona-fide headliner. John says, “I feel the sounds and general spirit and energy of this album are best summed up in the words – free, melodic, funky, phat and rocking. There’s definitely a certain attitude that comes across on the album. Perhaps there’s a conviction, in a song writing and production sense, that I haven’t tapped into so much on earlier works that seems to be more prevalent on April Uprising. There’s chemistry and language that Nicky, Byron and I have found that really compliments these songs in all their different facets”.

The band’s passionate following will get a taste for the new album and lineup beginning February 11th at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. The spring tour of sold out shows is seemingly the perfect set-up for a major festival leg this summer.  The tour includes stops in: Chicago, IL (Feb 15th), Boulder, CO (Feb. 16th), Los Angeles, CA (Feb 18th) and San Francisco, CA (Feb 20th).

The first single from April Uprising, entitled “One Way Road” has already topped the Australian charts and poised for a similar run in the States if the sold out mini-tour is any indication. Stay tuned for a review of the Boulder, CO show at the Fox Theatre later this month. In the meantime, enjoy the video for “One Way Road” below.
