Republican Speaker of The House John Boehner is under investigation by The Federal Election Commission for breaking the rules of campaign contributions.

At issue is the amount of excessive campaign contributions accepted by Speaker Boehner during the 2012 election. Records indicate that Boehner's campaign organization, Friends of John Boehner, may have illegally allowed as much as $150,000 to mingle with legally donated funds. This figure is a drop in the bucket to the most powerful republican in Washington D.C. who was the House's top earner last election cycle earning $22 million.

The Federal Election Commission, according to the local reporting of cleveland.com, sent a letter of warning to the Friends of John Boehner stating:

Although the commission may take further legal action concerning the acceptance of excessive contributions, your prompt action to refund the excessive amount will be taken into consideration.

This means that even if Boehner returns the illegal contributions, he may face further investigation and penalties.

Boehner, leaving little to chance, has already begun fundraising for the 2014 midterm race and has raised $5.9 million in 8 months. At this pace he may be able to beat his already impressive fundraising record, but will all of the funds be legally acquired? Time will tell.
