ABC Family's 25 Days of Christmas continues tonight with special holiday episodes of two of the network's original series. We recently caught up with Melissa & Joey star Joey Lawrence to ask him about his show's Christmas-themed installment - and whether or not he knows the answer to that pesky cliffhanger that audiences are still wondering about.
What makes this episode different from all the other TV holiday episodes? "Probably that it's the best Christmas show of a TV episode you'll ever see," quipped Joey, before he explained, "You get a nice glimpse into the sort of holiday world of Mel and Joe. We've never done that [before].
He's happy that his show gets to be part of the network's longstanding 25 Days of Christmas event. "For [ABC Family] to include, for the first time ever, a couple of their TV shows, is pretty cool," he continued. "I think it'll be fun. The fans are excited about it."
When last we left Joey's character, Joe Longo, he was realizing the extent of his feelings for Mel (Melissa Joan Hart). Fans will have to wait until January 15 to see what happens next, but Joey already has the answer. "I know all the ins and outs and the secrets," he told us. "And we're currently shooting Season 3B, which comes back in January, and it's awesome. We're having so much fun, and I think the fans are going to like where it's going."
How hard has it been for him not to tell anyone how things turn out? "It's not hard for me," he continued, laughing, "I like not telling people. It makes me feel smarter. I love it."
At this point, Joey is a television veteran, particularly in the comedy department. Yet before Melissa & Joey came along, it'd been awhile since he'd starred in a sitcom, going back to The WB's Run of the House from 2003 to 2004. Now, not only is he the star, but he's also an executive producer, has directed episodes, and even helped compose the theme music.
Asked how it feels to have a successful show in its third season, he said, "It's fun. I've been doing this for a long time. I didn't do half-hour comedy for awhile. But coming back to it like this...It's definitely part of the evolution I think in the half-hour world. I'm proud of the product. I think we do a really good show. It's just all good. It's doing what you love to do and having success at it."
He's also continuing to work on other aspects of his career, as time allows. "When you're involved with a show like this, it really does consume pretty much all my professional obligation. It's a big obligation for me to fill," he continued. "Especially when you have two young kids. That's a full time job unto itself.
"I am working on some music," he revealed. "We're going to be releasing a brand new single, an original big band tune, I'd say by the end of the year." While Joey works on a full big band album, you can check out his past musical releases on iTunes.
But right now, Joey's focus is on making us laugh, as he's been doing for decades. "We're shooting [Melissa & Joey] from now till the middle of April," he said. "I'm excited about the show coming back."
