Despite the scorching heat, competitive eaters gathered together, as they do every year, on Coney Island for Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest on the Fourth of July. Joey Chestnut was the headliner once again, as he was going for his record sixth win. Despite some strong competition, he once again came out on top as shown on ESPN.

Chestnut consumed 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes, matching his world record that he set back in 2009. Yet the competitive champion of the world did have some competition in some unlikely places, at least in the first five minutes. A young up-and-comer, Matt "Megatoad" Stonie, was nearly dog for dog with him up until the halfway mark.

Alas, Nathan's Famous hot dog contest belongs to Joey Chestnut as it has for the past few years. Still, Pat "Deep Dish" Bertoletti and Tim "Eater X" Janus performed admirably, each eating 51 and 52 respectively to land third and second place.

Prior to the men's competition, the female competitive eaters also had a chance to chow down at Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest. Once again, Sonya "Black Widow" Thomas won, breaking her 2009 record of 41 with 45 hot dogs consumed. As the ESPN commentators said, "She's the Katniss Everdeen of competitive eating."

This was the 97th year of Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest on Coney Island.
