Joe's OK Bayou happy hour more than okay

When one finds himself in a weeklong battle with the Kentucky DMV, full days of his life wasted with paperwork, long lines and red tape, which culminates in a final successful trip all the way out to the Jeffersontown branch, there are worse places to end up on a whim with a 23oz Miller Lite in front of him than Joe’s OK Bayou. A lot worse.

Located in a shopping center off I-64, nestled between a Skyline Chili and a Kroger Signature – whatever that is – one would expect to find a chain restaurant, and that’s pretty much what Joe’s appears to be from the parking lot. Chain restaurants, however, don’t usually display photos of grown men with beer buckets over their heads or hang a sign behind the bar that reads, “This isn’t Burger King. You don’t get it your way. You take it my way or you don’t get the damn thing.”

So, no, while there is a second location in New Albany, Joe’s OK Bayou is not a chain restaurant.

Not being a chain, of course, doesn’t automatically qualify a place as somewhere worth frequenting, but it’s a good start. Add to it a happy hour where two huge beers, a delectable order of fried crawfish and a generous portion of wings will run one around twenty bucks with tip, and yeah, you’ve got a place worth frequenting.

Besides the happy hour menu, Joe’s offers some pretty decently priced Cajun food – think shrimp, jambalaya, alligator, catfish, gumbo, etc. – highlighted by the ridiculously tempting Boiled Crawfish Platter (which a neighboring diner was thoroughly enjoying) that includes 3lbs of Louisiana crawfish for $20.

Happy Hour Monday – Friday, 4-6pm (and during all UK and UofL games):

  • $1 off all 23oz drafts (Miller Lite, Bud Lite, Michelob Amber Bock, Abita Andygator, Blue Moon, Sam Adams Lager)
  • $4.95 Appetizers (Jalapeno Poppers, Cajun Popcorn, Spicy Garlic Buffalo Wings, Fried Pickles, Mozzarela Sticks)

Specials:

  • Nightly Dinner Specials: $3 off a featured dinner, seven days a week
  • $1.99 Kids meals every Sunday
  • Beer of the Month: $3 23oz drafts, all day everyday. As of 9.30.2010 this was Miller Lite.
