Joe "Diesel" Riggs just re-signed with UFC last week and they already had him on the schedule to fight Paulo Thiago in a welterweight fight at UFC Fight Night on Sept. 13, 2014. Unfortunately, Riggs won't be able to make it there. ESPN reported on July 29, 2014, that Riggs was involved in a firearm-related accident at his home on Monday, and he ended up accidentally shooting himself.

The 31-year-old Riggs was said to be cleaning a gun, but it apparently still had a live round in it. The pistol accidentally went off and hit Riggs in his hand and thigh.

He was hospitalized for his injuries, but UFC has stated that they were non life-threatening.

"We were made aware that newly-signed UFC competitor Joe Riggs was involved in an unfortunate accident last night," the UFC said. "While cleaning his permitted firearm, the gun discharged, injuring his hand and upper thigh. Riggs was transported to a nearby hospital in Arizona where is being treated by physicians. We wish Joe a speedy recovery."

Fox Sports has said they wouldn't be surprised if everyone started calling Riggs by the name of "Plaxico Burress." For those that don't remember, the NFL wide receiver had a gun tucked in his belt in 2009 as he went to a nightclub. He ended up shooting himself in the leg.

As for Riggs? He's officially out of the September event against Thiago. UFC has said that they are already looking for a replacement to face off with Thiago.

Riggs has a record of 40-14 and has won six straight fights. He's getting a second chance in the UFC after winning Bellator's Ultimate Fighter reality series. Riggs hasn't competed in UFC since 2006, but he will have a bit longer to wait to start again.
