It was eight long years between the last two novels in Joe R. Lansdale's popular "Hap and Leonard" series, but there's good news for Champion Joe's fans: Devil Red, the eighth book in the series, is set to come out on March 15, 2011.
It's the second big announcement from Lansdale regarding his fan-favorite duo - earlier, he announced that Subterranean Press will be releasing a "Hap and Leonard" novella, Hyenas, in January of next year.
According to the Devil Red synopsis provided on Lansdale's website (you'll have to scroll down to the August 12 entry - this one slipped right on by me), the unlikeliest best friends in the world are going a second round with the Dixie Mafia, an outfit they first tangled with in the most recent entry in the series, Vanilla Ride. This time around, they're helping a friend investigate a cold-case double murder involving at least one victim that was once part of a vampire cult.
I spent the last two years discovering and catching up with this series, and knowing that there's a double-shot of new material on the way has me wishing away the last few months of 2010. There's one particular line in the synopsis that really got me going, as it will anyone who's familiar with the series: "And if that's not enough, Leonard has taken to wearing a deerstalker cap..." That's gold.
