The Sprint Cup Series visits the first of two road courses on the 2014 schedule this weekend, as the teams head to California for the Toyota/SaveMart 350 at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday, June 22nd. Joe Gibbs Racing driver Kyle Busch won the race in 2008, but his JGR teammates Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin have yet to navigate the twists and turns of the nearly-two-mile track and find their way to victory lane.
Busch, who has three wins on road courses (including two at Watkins Glen International), will be behind the wheel of the No. 18 Pretzel M&Ms Toyota Camry this Sunday. In spite of his win, in which he moved up from a qualifying effort of 30th, he has only one other top 10 finish at Sonoma – eighth place in 2007.
Kenseth, in the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota on Sunday, has had next to no luck on road courses, particularly Sonoma. Kenseth has just one top 10 finish in 14 starts at the 12-turn track. Hamlin’s statistics are slightly better than Kenseth’s, as the driver of the No. 11 FedEx Freight Toyota has two top 10 finishes in eight starts at Sonoma.
Qualifying for the Toyota/SaveMart 350 at Sonoma Raceway gets underway at 10:40 a.m. PT on Saturday; the race goes green Sunday at noon PT. Keep up with the action at joegibbsracing.com.
