The Sprint Cup Series visits “The Paperclip,” Martinsville Speedway, for this weekend’s STP 500 on Sunday, March 30th. Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth will all be back behind the wheels of their Toyota Camrys at the .526-mile track, the shortest track on the Cup Series schedule.
Hamlin, in the No. 11 FedEx Freight Toyota Camry, has been cleared to race this weekend after missing last weekend’s race at Auto Club Speedway with vision problems caused by a sliver of metal in his eye. Hamlin has four wins and 13 top 10 finishes in 16 races at Martinsville, along with three poles; his most recent win in the fall of 2010 ended a three-race win streak by Hamlin at the track. Hamlin missed last year’s first race at Martinsville with his back injury, but finished seventh there in the fall.
Busch, in the No. 18 M&Ms Toyota, has nine top 10 finishes in 18 races at the track, with a best finish of second in the fall of 2012. Last season, Busch picked up finishes of fifth (spring) and 15th (fall), leading laps in both events.
Kenseth, in the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota on Sunday, has nine top 10 finishes in 28 races at “The Paperclip.” He has finished second there twice, first back in the spring of 2002 and most recently in last fall’s race. Kenseth finished 14th in the spring race at Martinsville last year.
The Sprint Cup Series qualifies for the STP 500 on Friday, March 28th at 4:40 p.m. ET, with the race going green on Sunday, March 30th at 1 p.m. ET. Keep up with the action at joegibbsracing.com.
