While the Sprint Cup and Camping World Truck Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend, the Nationwide Series will take to the track in Newton, Iowa, home of the Rusty Wallace-designed Iowa Speedway. Joe Gibbs Racing Nationwide Series regular Elliott Sadler will be joined by Sam Hornish Jr. and Michael McDowell at the .875-mile track.
Sadler, in the No. 11 OneMain Financial Toyota Camry, has a stellar record at Iowa, with a win in the August 2012 race, three straight poles (August 2011 to August 2012) and no finish worst than eighth in six races; his average start at Iowa is 4.3 and average finish 3.7; last year, Sadler finished third and eighth at Iowa. Sadler sits second in Nationwide Series points, picking up a win at the last race in Talladega.
Hornish Jr., in the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota, has three top five finishes in five starts at Iowa, including a runner-up finish in the race last August. Hornish Jr. has one start in the No. 54 this season, a fifth-place finish at Talladega after starting from the pole; the No. 54 currently leads the owners’ points standings in the Nationwide Series by 36 points over the No. 5 of JR Motorsports.
McDowell, in the No. 20 Pizza Ranch Toyota, makes his first start of the season for JGR; McDowell raced for the team at Iowa in 2011 and 2012. McDowell has five top 10 finishes in six races at the track, including finishes of third and sixth in 2012.
The Nationwide Series qualifies for the Get To Know Newton 250 presented by Sherwin Williams at 6:10 p.m. CT Saturday night, with the race going green Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. Keep up with the action at joegibbsracing.com.
