Being gay today....
Is frankly a yawn. Apparently, Jodie Foster, who has disclosed in the past that her partner is female, somehow just revealed at the Golden Globes that she is gay.
And water is still wet. The sun continues to rise in the east to set in the west.
This should be a surprise to no one.
Vice-President Joe Biden was correct in saying that by inviting diversity into our homes, via television and movies, Americans become more comfortable with different types of folks.
Most revelations are hardly a surprise. There is the all too handsome star who never seemed to date women. And of course, the evangelical minister who railed against homosexuality, speaking on behalf of a God who never discussed the issue.
Yes, yes, the prohibition is set forth in the Old Testament, Leviticus. This chapter, like the entire Bible, was written by men.
What is more surprising is that Foster remained friends with Mel Gibson. Bada boom.
Sexual orientation is no one’s business but when celebrities talk about it with pride and happiness, it helps the teenagers struggling with the issue and supports, even slightly, others to understand that this is part of life and love.
As Ms. Foster said: (and this column is paraphrasing) normal is not a goal worth pursuing.
The only time a revelation like this is fun, is when the person has been spewing horrific comments about the gay community.
That would be you, Ted Haggard, and you, George Rekers, and you, Eddie Long, and you (next one to be outed). Just to name to few.
With all the folks seemingly justifying rape, gay and lesbian doesn’t seem all that different and interesting.
It really is, sorry Jodie, kind of normal.
