On March 19, 2013, a defense expert returned to the stand at the Jodi Arias trial, testifying that the accused murderer lied over and over during a psychological evaluation, from which she was eventually diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), reports The Item.
Arias, 32, is charged with the brutal 2008 murder of her former lover, Arizona man Travis Alexander, 30. He was stabbed over two dozen times, was shot in the head, and his throat was slashed. She claims she killed him in self-defense, but during the trial Arias has testified she does not remember much about the confrontation the two had that eventually led to his death.

Psychologist Richard Samuels, who said he’s met with Arias in jail more than 12 times, testified on March 14 that “A large percentage of individuals who are in such settings do not remember or have cloudy or foggy memories of what has transpired… We are more concerned with survival.” Samuels also testfied he believes Arias suffers from PTSD and dissociative amnesia.

Samuels explained that he found most of Arias’ untruths to be irrelevant to the outcome of the test, despite prosecutor Juan Martinez’s insistence that the doctor’s diagnosis of Arias was just speculation, reports The Item.

On March 18, Martinez also questioned Samuels about his credibility, when it was learned Samuels had bought Arias a book to help her with her self-esteem and delivered it to her in prison.
Samuels insisted he was purely objective in his evaluation of Arias and denied any accusations or implications of impropriety.
