In Texas there are amazing opportunities for kids in film, some paying well and others providing good experience. Recently there have been numerous calls for bi-lingual and bi-racial kids for PSAs (public service announcements) and wonderful, redemptive films. These opportunities and more are listed and updated on the Cru Film ’12 site on Facebook.
Parents and guardians of kids interested in working in the film and entertainment industries need to guard and protect their kids without being overly involved stage or helicopter parents. There are Child Labor Laws for kids in these industries, but they are different in every state. It is best for parents or guardians to help their talented kids secure good, reputable training and then a licensed agent who is effective with kids. Parents or guardians should not pay fees upfront for auditions, casting, web presence, or representation. There should be no requirement by the agent for kids to use classes or services provided by the agency. Instead the agent should guide the kids to good services provided by separate businesses for headshots, taped auditions, and classes. Unethical, illegal, and blatant scams prey on children, parents, grandparents in this industry. But there are many in this business who are people of integrity, who care about the welfare of kids.
