EMT training will equip you for a job with a future. Teens and adults can take advantage of the training being offered by the St. Louis public school district’s department of career and technical education for its Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) Training Course.
Program benefits: Certified EMT Basic training which prepares students for the opportunity to earn between $28,000 and $43,000 annually in the St. Louis area.
Program Outline
The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certifies emergency medical service providers at four levels:
- First Responder,
- Emergency Medical Technician,
- Advanced EMT, and
- Paramedic.
Students enrolled in the NREMT program will receive the Emergency Medical Technician -Basic (EMT-B) course for the first level of the emergency medical system. An EMT trained at this level is prepared to care for patients at the scene of an accident and while transporting patients by ambulance to the hospital. The EMT-Basic also has the skills to assess a patient's condition and manage respiratory, cardiac, trauma emergencies, medical emergencies, pediatric and obstetric emergencies.
Gateway’s Emergency Medical Technician -Basic (EMT-B) program is certified as by both the Missouri Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (BEMS) and with the Emergency Care and Safety Institute (ECSI). The basic (EMT-B) course also provides training in first aid and CPR.
Location
Classes will be held two evenings a week (Tuesday & Thursday) for 20 weeks at Gateway Institute of Technology, 5101 McRee. Students are expected to attend from 4:00pm until 8:00pm each session from January 17th through May 24th. Attending each session throughout the course period will ensure that each student achieves the required 150 classroom hours. Clinical hours are included based upon space availability. The course will end on May 24th with a commencement ceremony.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the EMT Training Program, students must be:
- Pre-registered for the classes beginning Tuesday, January 17;
- At least eighteen (18) years of age;
- Possess a valid driver’s license;
- Proficient in intermediate English; and
- Pass a background check & health screenings.
Tuition and Fees
- $50.00 non-refundable registration fee is due when registering at the St. Louis Board of Education, Office of Career and Technical Education, 801 N. 11 Street, St. Louis, MO 63101.
- Full tuition payment of $820.00 is due by Tuesday, January 17 and financial aid is available for students, ages 18-21, who meet eligibility criteria.
- Tuition payments can be certified checks or money orders made payable to the St. Louis Public Schools.
- The practical test fee of $70.00 is due three (3) weeks before the practical exam is taken.
- The written test fee of $70.00 is due when registering for the exam.
- Additional costs that may be incurred during the course of the training includes, but is not limited to: uniform, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, criminal background check and/or drug screening, health exam, immunizations and classroom supplies.
