More job opportunities for people with disabilities are one of the goals of the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. On August 27.2013, the White House has announced changes to Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to increase employment for people with disabilities.
Federal contractors and subcontractors must have 7% of each work group consist of individuals with disabilities. The changes to the rule requires the contractors to take specific actions for recruitment, training, policies and record keeping that are similar to those required for women and minority workplace equality.
It is a small step in the direction of employment for our children with special needs as it only affects contractors and subcontractors who contract with the federal government. Also, the rules are in effect 180 days after they appear in the Federal Register and that has not happened yet. However, a small step is better than no step at all.
