Real Salt Lake forward Joao Plata’s two tallies landed him the Major League Soccer Player of the Week award for Week 9 of the 2014 MLS season.

Plata scored the two goals in Salt Lake’s 3-2 come-from-behind triumph over the Chicago Fire on Saturday night and included the game-winning strike during second half stoppage time.

The former Toronto FC player began RSL’s comeback in the 72nd minute, when he received a pass from midfielder Javier Morales at the top of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot through traffic into the bottom left corner.

With the game locked at 2-2 in the 93rd minute, forward Alvaro Saborio crossed the ball from the left flank to Plata, who was making a far post run, and he calmly volleyed the ball past the diving goalkeeper to give RSL the lead.

Real Salt Lake returns to action this Sunday on the road against the Houston Dynamo.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).
