Joan Rivers, the long-time comedian and television star, was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital on Thursday morning. Rivers, who is 81 years old, was rushed to the hospital during a procedure that was being done on her vocal chords on the Upper East Side. Shortly after 9:30 a.m., she stopped breathing, according to CBS News on Thursday. Rivers reportedly went into cardiac arrest.
Sid Dinsay, a Mount Sinai Hospital spokesperson, said that Rivers was taken to The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York where she is being attended to. He said that her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support. He also promised to provide updates on her condition as they become available.
As far as Rivers’ performances are concerned, she was scheduled to perform Friday night at Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank. That show has been postponed. Other than the news of her hospitalization and the cancellation of Friday’s show, representatives for the comedian did not make any comments.
The long-time Manhattan, New York City resident who has been active in show business for some 50 years has been quite active in recent times, according to USA Today. She hosts “Fashion Police” on the E! Network and also co-stars with her daughter Melissa on “Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?” on the WE-tv realty show. Additionally, she is on an online talk show called “In Bed With Joan.” Back in the day, she asked, “Can we talk?” Nowadays, she asks persons on the red carpet, “Who are you wearing?”
She has had a headline grabbing promotional tour for her latest book, “Diary of a Mad Diva” which was recently released. Early on during the book tour, she walked off a CNN interview when she felt the interviewer was being totally negative. Days later, David Letterman – in comedic style – walked off an interview he was doing with Rivers on his show. Among other incidents, Rivers also made headlines recently for targeting the Obamas with her schtick. She said President Obama is gay and the First Lady is a transvestite. In a non-comedic fashion, she also spoke out on the Gaza-Israel debate recently.
